One “Accident” Prevented Can Be A Life Saved

“I had a fire at my house. It was scary. But now I know what to do if it ever happens again.”

— Jade I., 2nd grader

No one ever thinks “accidents” will happen to them. Yet accidents—unintentional injuries—are the #1 cause of death for children, teens and adults up to age 44, and a leading cause for older adults.

Prevention 1st helps people prepare for, and prevent, the unthinkable. Because 90% of accidents are absolutely preventable. By taking simple, concrete steps to keep your family safe — installing working smoke alarms, removing clutter, practicing an exit plan — your chances of sustaining an injury are greatly reduced.

Prevention 1st develops and delivers hands-on, evidence-based training programs to protect those most at risk for injuries including children, older adults, and people with developmental disabilities.

And it works. Participants consistently rate Prevention 1st’s programs “highly effective,” and they rate the skills taught as ones they will use at home.

But the need is much greater than our ability to provide it. Each year, Prevention 1st gets many more requests for training —from schools, community groups, and organizations serving people with disabilities—than can be fulfilled.
